1824 color lithograph by Louis L?opold Boilly. A man is placing curl-paper in a woman's hair; the woman grimaces and pushes away the man. Before the advent of store bought plastic rollers, metal pins, chemical perms and curling irons came the hairstyle art of the paper curl. The method was simple and only required strong paper. The paper was cut into long strips. The hair was dampened, locks of hair were combed and flattened, then the paper was wrapped around the center of the lock once or twice and then slid down to the end of the hair section.
