Davies Gilbert, English Engineer and Politician
Davies Gilbert (born Davies Giddy, March 6, 1767 - December 24, 1839) was a Cornish engineer and political figure. He served as a Member of Parliament where he was an outspoken supporter of engineering and scientific inquiry. His skills were sought by such early engineering pioneers as Jonathan Hornblower, Richard Trevithick and Thomas Telford. He was the President of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall from its foundation in 1814 until his death in 1839. This image has been colorized
