Death of Crassus at Carrhae Against the Parthians, 53 BC

Crassus greed to meet the Parthian general, but when he mounted his horse to ride to the Parthian camp, his junior officer Octavius suspected a Parthian trap and grabbed Crassus horse by the bridle, instigating a sudden fight with the Parthians that left the Roman party dead, including Crassus. Marcus Licinius Crassus (115-53 BC) was a Roman general and politician who commanded the right wing of Sulla's army at the Battle of the Colline Gate, suppressed the slave revolt led by Spartacus, provided political and financial support to Julius Caesar and entered into the political alliance known as the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Julius Caesar. He is considered the wealthiest man in Roman history, and perhaps one of the richest men in all history. Crassus desired recognition for his military victories; this ambition for acclaim eventually led him into Syria, where he was defeated and killed in the Roman defeat at Carrhae against a Parthian General named Surena
