Edith Cavell
Edith Cavell (1865-1915) is well known for her statement that patriotism is not enough and was an influential pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium. Cavell, was executed by the Germans during World War I for having helped allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium to the Netherlands, in violation of military law. She is celebrated and honored with many different memorials (still existing today) for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction
