Ernst von Bibra Working By Light of Bioluminescence

German naturalist Ernst von Bibra (1806-1878) in his cabin, which is lit by pyrosomes. Bibra relates in his Travels to Chile that he once caught half a dozen pyrosomes and read a description of them in a book by the light of their own phosphorescence. Pyrosomes, genus Pyrosoma, are free-floating colonial tunicates and are brightly bioluminescent. They are sometimes called fire salps. Engraving from Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly, 1885. Colorized
