Father Ferdinand Verbiest, Jesuit missionary and favorite to the Kangxi Emperor, depicted in the guise of Chinese priest-astronomer Wu Yong, in a 19th century woodcut by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Verbiest redesigned the faulty Chinese calendar of 1670, which included an extra month unnecessarily among other errors
