Fire on the steamboat Lexington in Long Island Sound on Monday evening, January 13th, 1840, in which 100 people died. The casing around the ship's smokestack caught fire due to overheating from mechanical error, igniting nearly 150 bales of cotton The disaster was depicted three days after the event in this lithograph by Currier and Ives; it was their first major-selling print
