Fossil Clams and Scallops

Fossils of the South Downs, or Illustrations of the Geology of Sussex by Gideon Mantell, engravings executed by Mrs. Mantell (Mary Ann Woodhouse), from drawings by the author, 1822. This is plate XXVI, including various Cretaceous bivalves (scallops and clams) and a brachiopod. The spined shell in the center is labeled Plagiostoma spinosa; it has also been known as Lima spinosa and Spondylus spinosus. Its common name in English is the thorny oyster, even though it is more closely related to scallops
