Fragment from a Persian Qur'an
A fragmentary leaf from a Qur'an manuscript from 1137 AD in Persia, modern-day Iran. The calligraphic text is illuminated with gold and pigments of different colors. The border decoration of interlacing circles in gold filled with blue set against the background color of the paper is possibly the earliest surviving example of this pattern in manuscript illumination
