Glashier and Coxwell, Path of September 5, 1862 Balloon

Balloonists James Glaisher and Henry Tracey Coxwell carried out experiments in the air for the British Association for the Advancement of Science. On September 5, 1862, they reached the greatest height achieved to that date. They both lost consciousness during the ascent. Coxwell initially lost all sensation in his hands but managed to pull the valve-cord with his teeth before blacking out. Later calculations estimated their maximum altitude at 35, 000 to 37, 000 ft.
