Gold Mine, New Mexico
"Stope in South Homestake gold mine, Nogal district, Lincoln County, New Mexico, in 1905. A stope is an open space, left behind after the desired minerals are extracted. Stopes were sometimes filled in afterwards with mine tailings, and sometimes left as is, to collapse later, unexpectedly. Plate 7-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 68, 1910."
