The Great Moon Hoax, Lunar Animals, 1835
The Great Moon Hoax refers to a series of articles that were published in 1835 by The Sun, a New York newspaper, about the discovery of life on the Moon, and falsely attributed to English astronomer John Herschel. The articles described fantastic animals, including unicorns and bat-like winged humanoids (Vespertilio-homo) who built temples. Authorship of the articles has been attributed to Richard Adams Locke
