Grizzly Bear Hunt, 1830s

Grizzly Bears are significant in the culture of Native American Indians for centuries and they maintain the endure in high esteem. The Native American tribes, a lot of which think the are still a representation of a deity, revere these powerful creatures and also have held them in good respect, recognizing their size, strength, speed and art. The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos ssp.) is a large population of the brown bear inhabiting North America. Its original range included much of the Great Plains and the southwestern states, but it has been extirpated in most of those areas. Combining Canada and the United States, grizzly bears inhabit approximately half the area of their historical range. Voyage dans l'interieur de l'Amerique du Nord, execute pendant les annees 1832-34. Karl Bodmer (February 11, 1809 - October 30, 1893) was a Swiss printmaker, lithographer, painter, illustrator and hunter. He accompanied the German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition. Bodmer was hired as an artist to record images of cities, rivers, towns and peoples they saw along the way, including the many tribes of Native Americans along the Missouri River and in that region
