Hero's Sound Machine

Hero's Sound Machine. An illustration from The Pneumatics of Hero of Alexandria from the Original Greek translated and edited by Bennet Woodcroft in 1851. The illustration depicts a device that produces sound from a stream of water. A stream of water is poured into the top of an air-tight container with horizontal compartments, syphons and pipes. When the water fills the upper chamber, it flows to the lower chambers in succession until it reaches the bottom. As each chamber fills, air is forced up through a pipe and produces a sound
