Hydraulic Gold Mine

Part of the north wall of the great hydraulic mine at North Bloomfield, Nevada County, California, in 1909. Except at the extreme right, the mining operations had ceased more than twenty years previously. This view illustrates the slowness with which vegetation reoccupies the surface. Note also the erosion of the gravel cliffs. The tailings from the enormous hydraulic pits silted up local rivers, leading to the end of hydraulic mining in the Sierra Nevada region
