Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, Russian Immunologist
Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, also known as Elie Metchnikoff (1845 -1916), Russian zoologist known for his pioneering research in immunology. He and Paul Ehrlich were jointly awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He discovered a process of immunity called phagocytosis and the cell responsible for it, called a phagocyte, specifically the macrophage, in 1882. Photographed in his lab, 1913
