Imported Beverages of Coffee, Tea and Cocoa, 1671

Frontispiece to The Uses of Coffee, Tea and Chocolate by Philippe Sylvestre Dufour, first published in 1671. This image, from the 1685 edition, shows racially stereotyped figures of a Middle Eastern man in Ottoman dress drinking coffee, a Chinese man drinking tea, and an indigenous Mexican drinking hot chocolate. Coffee and tea were imported into Europe from the Middle East and China, respectively, starting in the 1600s. Columbus brought cacao beans back to Spain in the early 1500s; imports on a large scale began after the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs
