On February 18, 1861, Jefferson Davis was sworn in as President of the Confederate States of America in front of the state capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama. The event included all of the necessary pomp and circumstance, with approximately 10, 000 people in attendance and a team of six matching gray horses pulling the presidential carriage. Howell Cobb, then President of the Confederate Congress, presented a Bible and administered the oath of office
