Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss, German Mathematician

Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), a German mathematician who contributed to all areas of mathematics and number theory. A child prodigy from a poor family, his education was financed by the Duke of Brunswick. He won fame when he showed how to rediscover the lost asteroid, Cerces, in 1801, but left most of his research unpublished. Had he published all his work, it is thought that he would have propelled mathematics half a century ahead on its line of progress
