Life of Martin Luther and Heroes of the Reformation

Lithograph entitled: Life of Martin Luther and heroes of the reformation. Shows Luther burning papal bull of excommunication, with vignettes from Luther's life and portraits of Jan Hus, Girolamo Savonarola, John Wycliffe, Caspar Creuziger, Phillip Melanchton, Johannes Bugenhagen, Gustav Adolf, and Bernhard, duke of Saxe-Weimar. Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a German priest, professor of theology and a major figure of the Protestant Reformation. He disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms resulted in his excommunication by the pope. His theology challenged the authority of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge. Jan Hus (1369-1415) Czech priest, philosopher and the first actual Church reformer. Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) was an Italian Dominican friar and scholastic who preached against the moral corruption of the clergy. John Wycliffe (1328-1384) was an English Scholastic philosopher, theologian, reformer and early dissident in the Roman Catholic Church. Caspar Creuziger or Caspar Cruciger the Elder (1504-1548) was a German humanist who worked with Martin Luther to revise Luther's German Bible translation. Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) was a German reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation. Johannes Bugenhagen (1485-1558) was a German priest and theologian who introduced the Protestant Reformation in the Duchy of Pomerania and Denmark in the 16th century
