Marian Anderson, American Opera Singer

A portrait of the American contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993). After graduating from high school in Philadelphia, Anderson took private singing lessons because the all-white music school to which she had applied would not accept her. She debuted to critical acclaim in 1925 and in 1928 sang at Carnegie Hall. She was the first African-American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1955
