Marines landing under fire at Santo Domingo, c. 1916. The United States occupation of the Dominican Republic lasted from May 13, 1916 to September 18, 1924. They feared that Germany might invade the country during World War I and use it as a base to attack the US. They also wanted to force the Dominicans to repay their large European debts, so that no European country would invade in retaliation
