Matthew Paris, Pilgrimage Map, 13th Century
Section of Pilgrim's map, LLondon to Dover. Matthew Paris (1200-1259), was a Benedictine monk, English chronicler, artist in illuminated manuscripts and cartographer, based at St Albans Abbey in Hertfordshire. His Chronica Majora contain annals from the creation of the world up to the year 1253. Also included are medieval road maps linking London through the major cities and owns of Europe with the major centers of pilgrimage, Rome and Jerusalem
