Methyl Cation (CH3+)
The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope detects a molecule known as the methyl cation (CH3+) for the first time in the protoplanetary disc surrounding a young star. Since the 1970s researchers have believed CH3+ plays as vital role in interstellar carbon chemistry. Webb's unique capabilities have finally made observing it possible. The discovery is significant as it's made in a region of space where planets capable of hosting life may eventually form
