Michael Faraday and Father Thames, 1855

Chemist Michael Faraday giving his card to Father Thames: And we hope the Dirty Fellow will consult the learned Professor. In 1855, Faraday wrote to parliament and to The Times to report on his findings about pollution in the Thames River, which was overrun with raw sewage. His warnings would be taken more seriously three years later after several cholera outbreaks and The Great Stink of 1858. Cartoon from Punch, 1855
