Native American Medicine Man Mask
A medicine man or medicine woman is a traditional healer and spiritual leader serving indigenous people in the Americas. This mask, from the 19th century, was worn by healers to frighten away the spirit thought to cause the disease or pain. Beating drums and shaking rattles while dancing around the patient were other methods used to exorcise the demons. The artist of the original painting was Paul Kane (1810-1871). Image colorized
