North Africa, Berber Ksar, 19th Century
Berber cave dwellings on hill, Duwayrat, southern Tunisia. Henchir-ACin-Dourat, also known as Ad-Duwayrat or Henchir Durat, is a former Roman-Berber civitas and archeological site in Tunisia. A ksar is the North African term for Berber castle (Berber fortified village). Like other ksour created by North African Berber communities, Henchir-ACin-Dourat was built on a hilltop to help protect it from raiding parties. The building material of the entire structure is normally adobe, or cut stone and adobe. F. Soler, circa 1880 and 1900
