Oral Thermometer, 1625

Earliest known illustration of an oral thermometer, drawn by its inventor, the Italian physician Sanctorius Sanctorius (1561-1636), in 1625. The thermometer was made of glass tubing and the vial at the bottom contained mercury. To get a reading, the patient had to stay in contact with the device for at least 20 minutes. Graduations on the tube gave quantitative measures of the patient's body temperature
