Paracelsus, Swiss Polymath
Paracelsus (1493-1541) Swiss physician, botanist, alchemist, occultist, and astrologer. He believed in the Doctrine of Signatures, which held that the appearance of a plant indicated what illnesses it would cure. He also felt that the practice of alchemy should be directed towards the preparation of responsible, non-toxic medicines for curing disease and not as a means for manufacturing gold
