Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex
NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope image of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, the closest star-forming region to Earth. A small stellar nursery, the young stars at its center are similar in mass to the Sun or smaller. The largest star, S1, appears within a glowing arch in the lower half of the image. The lighter-colored gas surrounding S1 is made of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a family of carbon-based molecules that are among the most common compounds in space
