Self-Propelled Road Machine, 1868
During the 19th century American inventors sought patents on self-propelled road machines. This steam-driven mechanical contraption was conceived by Zadoc Dederick and Isaac Grass from Newark, New Jersey, who said, the pivots, cranks and connecting rods will produce an alternately-stepping motion'. They were awarded a patent in 1868
