Slave Compound, Gulf of Guinea, 1746

Slave factories, or compounds, maintained by traders from four European nations on the Gulf of Guinea in what is now Nigeria. The Slave Coast is a historical name formerly used for parts of coastal West Africa along the Bight of Benin. The name is derived from the region's history as a major source of African slaves during the Atlantic slave trade from the early 16th century to the late 19th century. Engraving by Nathaniel Parr, 1746
