The smiths in this 15th century manuscript are hammering metal into shape over a solid iron anvil, their tools hanging behind them. Smiths workshops were housed in a separate building to reduce the risk of the rest of the castle catching fire. With an anvil and a hammer a blacksmith can make everything he needs.
