Plate showing the different stages of a diseased tongue with yellow fever. Yellow fever is a tropical viral infection transmitted by mosquito bite. It causes fever, nausea, and headaches. A toxic form of the disease can lead to jaundice, internal bleeding, and death. Artwork is by Charles Philibert from Observations sur la Fievre Jaune, Faites a Cadix, en 1819 by the French physicians Andrce Mazet (December 1793 - October 22, 1821) and Etienne Pariset (August 15, 1770 - July 3, 1847), documenting the 1819 yellow fever epidemic in Cadiz, Spain
