Symbolic Creation of the Philosopher's Stone, 12th Century

A man and a woman, both wearing crowns, are engaging in sexual intercourse; the sun and the moon appear on the right and represent the two essences. This union may represent the ultimate harmony necessary for the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. Image appeared in The Turba Philosophorum or assembly of the alchemical philosophers, it is one of the earliest Latin alchemical texts, probably dating from the 12th century. It introduced many of the key themes of the alchemical tradition and was often quoted in later writings
