: Tovar Codex, Aztec Rulers Tenoch and Tochtzin

Tovar Codex, Aztec Rulers Tenoch and Tochtzin

Entitled: Tula. Coatepec, the Toltec city in Tula, is represented by a hill with a serpent or snake on it. Water leaping with fish flows from the hill. On the right is Tenoch the legendary hero who founded Tenochtitlan. On the left is Tochtzin from Calpan. The two rulers sit on basketwork thrones. The Toltec civilization was already in decline by the 12th century and was routed in mid-century by the Aztecs. The Tovar Codex (16th century) contains detailed information about the rites and ceremonies of the Aztecs. The codex is illustrated with 51 full-page paintings in watercolor. The first section is a history of the travels of the Aztecs prior to the arrival of the Spanish. The second section is an illustrated history of the Aztecs. Illustration taken from a 19th century transcript of Juan de Tovar's Historia de la benida de los yndios apoblar a Mexico (the Codex Tovar)
