Transatlantic Cable

An illustration representing the transatlantic telegraph cable. This was the first cable used for telegraph communications laid across the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. After 5 attempts, a two-thousand mile long copper cable was successfully laid in 1866 linking the US (represented by an eagle in the image shown) to Great Britain (represented by the lion). From its beginnings in 1854, Cyrus Field's proposal for an Atlantic cable met every technical and financial adversity, including a setback in 1858 after it carried messages successfully for 3 weeks, then failed. The results of Field's perseverance won him praise from around the world, a gold medal from Congress and celebratory prints like this one bearing his portrait above neptune
