Volcanic Soils, Argentina, Satellite Image
In this Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite image, a patchwork of farm plots climbs toward a volcanic mountain looming east of the Argentine town of San Luis. The richness of the volcanic soils in the central Andes encourages the spread of agriculture in the region. The wind often blows away much of the soil that erodes from the steep volcanic slopes, and the meager amounts of annual rainfall remain a constant challenge to farmers struggling to grow their crops
