William Gilbert (1540-1603) English physician and scientist born at Colchester, Essex. Appointed physician to Elizabeth I (1601). Carried out experiments on electricity and magnetism and was the first person to use the terms electric, electric attraction and magnetic pole. Published his De Magnete... ('On the Magnet...')
