William Gilbert (1540-1603) English physician and scientist born at Colchester, Essex. Appointed physician to Elizabeth I (1601). Carried out experiments on electricity and magnetism and was the first person to use the terms electric, electric attraction and magnetic pole. Published his De Magnete... ('On the Magnet...') (London, 1600) Engraving
