People cutting up a horse carcass for food, Berlin 1919

The picture, dated 2 May 1919, shows the carcass of a horse, killed in the Spartakist uprising in Munich, which was being cut up for food. The Socialists lost power before the year ended and it was here in Munich that Adolf Hitler was at the time serving with the 2nd Infantry Regiment. Later that year he was sent by the army political department to spy on the German Workers Party. This card is of particular note because it is reproduced from a photograph taken by Heinrich Hoffmann, later to become Hitlers close friend and photographer. It is interesting to speculate whether this is Hoffmanns first postcard and if so, whether, when it was published, he had already met Hitler
