Belgian Patients and VAD Staff, B Ward, Quex Park.This ward was situated in the first gallery of the Museum, built in 1896, The Gallery housed a diorama (right hand side of photograph, covered by a screen), natural history and ethnography displays. Fifteen beds were used in this room. Beyond the archway is C Ward in the second gallery which was added in the early 1900s. The two VAD members in the photograph are members of the Birchington Detachment Kent/178. The right hand one is Mrs Mary E Holmes, Lady Superintendant. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
