Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group

Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group and stretcher bearers outside The Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children (date - journal). Sir Alfred Yarrow opened this home in 1894. In late 1914 the Committee of Management offered the Home to the military authorities as a military hospital, entirely staffed and paid for. This arrangement continued until c. August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. Major Powell-Cotton was the Area VAD Transport Officer in Thanet, responsible for the transport of patients from their arrival on ambulance trains at local stations to the nine VAD hospitals in the area. Between 1914 and 1916 he was assisted in this by the Yarrow Stretcher Bearers. This commemorative photograph was taken at the time the Yarrow authorities stopped running the hospital in August 1916. The photograph was taken in front of the main building. Today (2014) this building is part of East Kent College, Broadstairs. The men in the photograph are wearing YH armbands. Major Powell-Cotton's ambulance Q2 is on the left. He converted his Renault car into this ambulane in September 1914. He is sitting on the left hand side of the front seat
