Christmas 1918 in Hospital Mess at Quex

A group of patients and staff, together with the three Powell-Cotton daughters are gathered in the Hospital Mess in the Winter Garden at Quex Park VAD Hospital pn Christmas Day 1918. Some of the patients seated at the table are wearing oriental silk jackets. Behind them is standing Camille Van Dyck, the Belgian Hospital Orderly, who was originally a patient at the Hospital in 1914. He was suffering the loss of his speech through shock and remained at the Hospital throughout the War. On the right of the photograph is standing Diana Powell-Cotton (1908-1986), seated near her are her sisters, Mary (1910-1998) and Antoinette (1913-1996). The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
