Group of patients preparing to leave hospital

A group of men in Army uniform, and several others in the patients uniform of hospital blues are standing outside the Winter Garden at Quex Park. The reverse of the photograph has written the date - September 1916 and also Pte. Allen by ambulance'. Private Ernest Gordon Allen, 990 11th Bty, Australian Infantry Force was admitted to the hospital on 27 July 1916 suffering from incluenza and debility and left the hospital on 21 September. Ernest Allen was born in Australia. He had served on Gallipoli in 1915. Private Allen is standing on the left of the group. Of the nine men who left the hospital on 21 September 1916 two subsequently lost their lives. Private James D Robertson, serving with 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was killed on 23 April 1917 and Private Jesse Breton, 15th Royal Welsh Fusiliers died of wounds on 13 October 1917. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
