Nurses, Yarrow Military Hospitsal

Group of fifteen female nursing staff, taken at the Yarrow Military Hospital, Broadstairs in December 1914. The women are, with one possible exception, the one standing 4th left, civilian nurses who were members of the staff of the Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children. Sir Alfred Yarrow (1842-1932), shipbuilder and philanthropist, opened the home in c. 1895. In late 1914 the Committee of Management offered the Home to the military authorities as a military hospital, entirely staffed and paid for. This arrangement continued until c. August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. The building is now part of East Kent College, Broadstairs, Kent UK
