Patients and nurses in front of Quex House

A group of patients, with five VAD nurses, in front of Quex House in about 1915. On the left can be seen the Winter Garden, a large conservatory joined to the drawing room of Quex House, which served as the Hospital Mess during the War. Beyond that can be seen the roof of the first Gallery of the Powell-Cotton Museum. This was where B Ward of the Hospital was sited. All the men, with the exception of a civilian sitting on the ground on the left of the photograph, are wearing the patients uniform hospital blues'. This comprised blue serge jacket and trousers, white shirt and red tie. A few of the men are wearing their regimental caps. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Major Powell-Cotton was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals
