Studio photograph of a Belgian soldier patient in civilian clothes. On the reverse is written in pencil in the hand of Major Powell-Cotton Jules Deruwez 8.2.15'. Jules Deruwez was a patient of the Birchington VAD at Quex Park. He was one of the first group of patients admitted at Quex Park by the Birchington VAD on 14 November 1914. He remained until 3 February 1915. He had a broken arm. He lived in Houdeng-Aimeries in Belgium. He was in the 23e de Ligne regiment and was 25 years old. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
