Thanet VAD Motor Transport fleet, Minster Station

Part of the Thanet VAD Motor Transport fleet at Minster Station, together with Major Powell-Cotton, VAD Transport Officer for Thanet, his assistant Mr Harold Cobb and Mr H. Dixon, Superintendent of Stretcher Bearers. The vehicles were (left to right) Mr Martin Tomson's car, Mr R. Grant's car, Quex 2 Ambulance, Quex 1 Ambulance, Mr Hovenden's Ambulance, Colonel Colin Campbell's Ambulance and Mr Punnett's Ambulance. The cars were used to transport walking wounded while the ambulances, which their owners had converted from their own vehicles, carried stretcher cases. This group, organised by Major Powell-Cotton throughout the War, was responsible for meeting convoy trains bringing groups of wounded to the VAD hospitals in Thanet. For several years the wounded came directly from the hospital ships arriving at Dover. There were VAD hospitals in Birchington, Westgate, Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, all staffed mainly by local volunteers
