VAD Ambulances at Quex Park

The two Quex Park VAD Ambulances are parked outside the front of Quex House. A stretcher is being unloaded from Q1, while Q2 alongside is closed up. Supervising the removal of the stretcher is Major PHG Powell-Cotton, VAD Transport Officer for Thanet. The two Quex Park ambulances were converted from two of Major Powell-Cotton's cars - a Delauney Bellville and a Renault, in September 1914 and were used as ambulances throughout the War. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
