VAD nurses, and child, at Quex

A group of eight VAD nurses, three seated, are beside the Winter Garden, Quex Park. With them is Antoinette Powell Cotton (1913-1996), dressed as a VAD nurse. She is holding the arm of Hannah Powell-Cotton, her mother. Nurse Fanny Watson is standing directly behind Hannah Powell-Cotton. To her right is Nurse Mildred Swinford, who was also a Masseuse at the Hospital. Fanny Watson did 10, 898 hours of work during the War; Mildred Swinford did 4, 492 hours. Seated on the right of the group is a nurse wearing the Order of St John armband. One of the hospital patients is watching from within the Winter Garden. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum
